Currently the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has 178 lecturers  with a composition of about 32.6% educated S3, 53.6% educated S2 and 13.8% educated S1. This proved the high potential of lecturers to implement “Tridarma college”, especially research and community service. Although the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has the highest number of funded research at the University of Brawijaya, but the ratio of the number of lecturer/research (NDP) in 2007 = 5.5, which means every 5 lecturers working on one research project. Ideally every lecturer who holds S2 and S3 have a research project so that at least in the Faculty there are about 130 titles each year research. Besides, the number of international publications is still very small, only about 12 titles in 2007, or only about 30% of the total funded research title. Human resource potential of this enormous must be empowered to improve competitiveness as an international standard of education providers through an increase in the number of research and international publications.

As a center for basic sciences,  Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences have a duty as a source of scientific discoveries of the fundamental rules of building a model, or a new postulate to support the development of applied sciences and technology for the welfare of mankind. Basic research is generally not oriented to short-term economic gain that is still not a priority for the government-funded. However, this research is the starting point of science and technology development. Therefore, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science need support research-oriented fundamental research and cross-disciplinary science with a clear development direction and in accordance with Department programs.

Indicators of research performance in 2007 showed that the amount of research that has had a road map and has a link to the match industry/community is still very small. So that needs to be done to make the direction of research efforts in line with the needs of the community/industry. Therefore, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science expects that each department has a clear Road Map research and serves as a compass of research and development in the science department.

To improve the performance achievements in research, P3M make a policy research grants that DPP/SPP in fiscal year 2013 aimed at (1). lower the ratio value of the number of lecturers with a number of research and publications (2). encourage the development of basic science (fundamental research), (3). Build a “researcher track record” , and (4). Initiate targeted research / study together with a road map Department. Thus expected to increase the gains of the faculty, in order to realize the mission of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science is able to become the world’s leading international institutions and able to answer the challenge of science and technology to support the future development through continuous research activities.
