History of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
At First, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences was just a Unit within Brawijaya University in the 1980s. Preparation of the establishment of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has been conducted since 1981 to collect basic laboratories in UB, into Central Laboratory which serves as a laboratory that supports teaching and basic practicum for the faculties of exact. Once the facilities and infrastructure is considered sufficient for the purposes of education S-1 (Bachelor Program), then in 1987 opened PROGRAM consisting of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, consists of 4 courses covering Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. In an effort to equip the facilities and infrastructure, carried out various forms of cooperation with foreign countries, for example, NUFFIC-Holland, IDP-Australia, and GTZ-Germany which can improve the competence of lecturers, amount of instrumentation and laboratory equipment, curriculum, and higher education implementation.
During its development, Mathematics and Natural Sciences Program received special attention from the Government through the Ministry of Education and Culture, both in terms of facility and infrastructure improvement and increasing the quantity and quality of lecturers. In accordance with the progress that has been achieved Mathematics and Natural Sciences Program and supported by the needs of graduates in the fields of Mathematics and Natural Sciences for industrial development, then from date October 21, 1993, with a decision of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0371/0/1993 that upgrades the status of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Program become Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences which consists of four departments includes Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry, Department of Physics and Department of Mathematics.
The rapid development of technology and industry demands the availability of skilled workers in the field of computers and analysis based on sufficient internal capacity in terms of facilities and human resources, and the in 1995 opened D3 Program Information Management and Computer Engineering and in 1997 opened D3 Program Chemical Analysis. Further education programs continue to be improved, in 1998 opened Statistics study program was, and in 2002 opened the Computer Science Study Program under the Department of Mathematics. In order to meet the needs of the government and the public in mitigation and disaster management, the Department of Physics opened the Geophysical and Instrumentation Studies Program in 2011. With the increasing number of Doctor Lecturers and in order to develop institutional capacity, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Opened Magister Program that started in 1997 with Master Program in Reproduction Biology. In 2007 opened the Program of Magister Chemistry. Physical Science master’s program in 2009, Mathematics master’s program in 2010, and Statistics master’s program in 2011. Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences still expand with opened Doctoral Biology Sciences program in 2011, which is currently being piloted doctoral program in other fields that are being proposed to the Directorate General of Higher Education is Doctoral Program of Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
In line with the changes in the regulations on college with the establishment of the vocational program between the years 2008-2010, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences phased out the Diploma Program, among others D3 Program Information Management and Computer Engineering and also D3 Program Chemical Analysis. Likewise, the presence of institutional change through policy UB Rector, in 2012 Computer Science Program merged into a Program of Information Technology and Computer Science that separate from Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Thus, until 2013 the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has 4 Departments and 13 studies programs including undergraduate and graduate programs.
To ensure quality in areas of Tridharma college and institutional management, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, implementing quality assurance systems both internally and externally. It is implemented with the establishment of quality assurance agencies in the Faculty (GJM) and Department (UJM). The success of the UB obtained ISO 9001: 2008 in 2012 could not be separated from the role of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, which participated in the audit of ISO 9001: 2008 in the context of the acquisition of ISO. In addition, to ensure the quality of its graduates Faculty has an accredited program of study through the National Accreditation Board (BAN-PT) with a good rating that is S-1 Study Program Biology (A), Chemistry (B), Physics (A), Mathematics (A), Statistics (A), Master Program in Biology (A), Chemistry (B), Physics (A), and other courses are being proposed.
